BCHS Draft 2

It’s 6:00 AM, and the alarm clock won’t shut up. I could very well hit snooze, or just turn the alarm off. But, I know I can’t do that, so instead I get up, letting out a string of mumbled, incoherent curses. “It’s too fucking early!”
I grab my clothes and head to the shower room. I call it that because we have no bathtub. Just a stand in shower. Anyway, in I go.
Today is the day I’ve got to go clean the park. Not exactly the best way to spend a Saturday with so many possibilities, but well, my parents said I should do it. I find it funny, considering they aren’t even going.
I’m your typical New Yorker. A teenage slob. I waste electricity and water flowers with leftover Pepsi. But, I don’t litter, and that’s what’s important.
I finish up in the shower and go into my parent’s room. I linger by the door. “Mom, Dad, I’m leaving,” I say to my parents.
Mom’s voice erupts out of the dark. “Have fun, Dylan.”
And, that’s me! My name is Dylan. But I’m a girl Dylan, not a boy Dylan. Being a boy Dylan would just be weird.
“I’ll try Ma,” I respond.
I walk slowly to the park. 6 blocks. It’s cold and wet. For once, there aren’t too many cars around. At least, for a New York City morning. It’s too early for Saturday. In New York, all the magic happens on a Saturday night.
I get to the park and some old guy talks about ‘his’ park and how important it is to help keep it is to help keep the community clean. I don’t pay any attention. I mean, I’m here, right? I think that by now, I know how important it is. Thank you very much.
He hands me one of those sticks with the needle at the end. And there I am, sticking away. Newport box, Cheetos bag, Poland Springs bottle, condom…? Ew.
Just at a condom is dangling for my stick, my neighbor Logan walks very nonchalantly toward me. He looks just like someone out of grease. It’s so funny. He’s grinning. My Condom-On-A-Stick in his sight.
“What have we got there, Dylan?” He asks with a stifled chuckle. It’s amazing how he just hasn’t begun to just loose it. His composure is amazing.
“A symbol of passion, lust, need,” I say dramatically, grinning.
“That’s really gross!” He laughs.
“I know,” I say as we begin to nod. He picks up a stick leaning against the fence and starts sticking. “Why so tardy?” I ask.
“No way I was gonna get up at 6. What’s the rush, anyway?”
I think about it, and honestly find no answer. What is the rush? Why the hell did I wake up at 6 to do this?
There’s silence for a while, as we keep sticking in the early morning cold.
Then:
“Holy shit! Ow, fuck! Fuck!” Logan’s stick has gone through his shoe. I can see the huge hole beginning to form in the cloth of his converses. I almost forgot that Logan has abnormally large feet for his age and size.
I lean down, counting toes. 1… 2… 3… 4… 5?
He’s still owing and grimacing when I begin to laugh. He frowns.
“How can you laugh at a time like this? I’m dying!”
I’m laughing uncontrollably. “You’re an idiot! The stick is between your toes!”
He wrinkles his brow, then frowns. “Really? I felt real pain! Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” I say as I’m wiping my tears. This guy is so clueless.
“Maybe I just felt that adrenaline stuff. That’s what hurt!”
I’m off, hysterical again. “No, stupid! Adrenaline stops pain!” I yell. I’ve lost it completely. “Gosh, you got blessed with all the good looks, but no brain!”
I’m howling. I have to pee.
“Well, it’s for a good reason.”
“Hm, and that being?”
“With a brain, I’d be unstoppable. I could rule the world! It almost wouldn’t be fair.”
I close my eyes, and Logan is sitting on his throne. “Bring me a banana shake!” He roars.
And there I am, holding his shake and quivering.
“Not enough bananas! I NEED MORE BANANAS!”
I snap out of it, and I’m back in reality.
“Yeah,” I chuckle, “It almost wouldn’t be fair.”
We look around us. We’ve spent so much time talking we haven’t noticed that we’ve picked up everything of the floor. The grass is green and the trash it gone. We look at each other, and then take a seat on the park bench. We look at the sun setting in an odd array of colors, as though something amazing has happened today, and only today. We admire our work.
“It looks good,” I say, breaking the silence. Logan just nods.
And then, as we’re sitting there, one with a hole in his shoe, and me… finally appreciating something, we come to realize something. For once, two, silly New York teenagers, in one small park, have changed the world.

Global Warming Notes Ported By Kylah [Dec. 14th, 2006|03:55 pm]
• Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global warming caused by human activities.
• The frequency of some diseases and other threats to human health often largely depend on local climate. Extreme temperatures can directly lead to death, while climate-related disturbances in ecological systems, such as changes in the range of infective parasites, can indirectly impact the incidence of serious infectious diseases. In addition, warm temperatures can increase air and water pollution, which in turn harm human health.
• The current scientific agreement is that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years can be blamed on human activities.
• The parts of global warming caused by humans are the increased amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
• The most significant and the lesser effects of global warming (things like higher temperatures, less snow cover, higher sea levels and weather changes) may not just influence human activities but also ecosystems. It could cause some species to be forced to leave their natural habitats or go extinct because of changing conditions, while on the other hand the change of conditions could cause an overabundance of other animals.
• One of the affects of global warming could be a change in ocean currents.
• Financial institutions, including the world's two largest insurance companies, warned in a 2002 study that "the increasing frequency of severe climatic events, coupled with social trends" could cost almost $150 billion each year in the next decade. These costs would be related to insurance and disaster relief, taxpayers, and industry alike.
• The United Nations' Environmental Program recently announced that due to severe weather around the world 2005 the most costly year on record.
• Global warming is thought to increase the probability of hurricanes emerging.
• The rise in temperature has caused diseases some diseases to spread to further and faster than they have in the past.
• Both droughts and floods could be repercussions of global warming.
• Scientists say that unless global warming emissions are reduced, average U.S. temperatures could rise another 3 to 9 degrees by the end of the century.
• Some of the affects expected of global warming are the rise of sea levels and flooding coastal areas, more frequent and more extreme heat waves, and droughts and wildfires occurring more often, disease-carrying mosquitoes being able to expand their range, and some species being pushed to extinction. Many of these changes have already begun.
• In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India.
• More than 250 people died as a result of a powerful heat wave that affected the majority of the eastern two-thirds of the United States in 1999.
• Disease-carrying mosquitoes are spreading as climate changes allow them to survive in areas they use to not be able to. A specific example is that some mosquitoes that can carry dengue fever viruses used to be limited to elevations of 3,300 feet but recently appeared at 7,200 feet in the Andes Mountains in Colombia. Also, Malaria has been detected in new higher-elevation areas in Indonesia.

The world is undoubtedly warming, rather the climate changing. The warming is a result of large carbon emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, large factories, use of inefficient and over-excessive energy, and smog from car emissions.

Over the years, scientists have easily observed that the planet is warming, and both plants and animals are going to dramatic lengths to cope with the change. Most recent studies have used wildlife to measure the extent of global warming and it’s effects. In these studies, a growing number of changes in traits and behavior are leading scientists to conclude the world is changing in unnatural ways.
Many observations have been made regarding wildlife traits and behavior changes. These changes include migration to cooler waters and/or areas, deteriorating health of certain species, increased species endangerment, and the early ending of annual hibernations. To name a few examples, Polar Bears are thinner and less healthy than the Polar Bears that existed 20 years ago, as well as fish species migrating northward in search of cooler waters.
Each of these sudden changes in species, traits, behavior, and habitat are the result of the planets warming. Data shows that Earth’s temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit, and if left unattended, temperatures may continue to rise an additional 2-10 degrees by the end of the 21st Century. So, while humans argue about thermometer readings, animals are actually providing evidence of climate and habitat change that should be considered when casting scientific and political decisions.

By the year 2100, sea levels will rise about 4 inches. This will cause many weather problems and floods of important oceans, rivers, lakes, and seas. This rise is due to the melting of large glaciers and other bodies of ice such as ice and snow on mountains, constantly and slowly melting under the increased heat. This adds inches to the sea level. Places that are not well above sea level will begin to face serious problems. California is losing a lot of land due to problems just like these.

Animals shrink size when the climate warms. A horse may become the size of a house-cat in no time if the warming continues.

Warming is due to mass carbon emissions mainly from fossil fuels, energy use, and other things. Most of the this energy and fuel is used/burned in mass developed countries and states, such as The US (and its most pollutant city, New York), and China, as well as Russia. Developing countries also contribute as they try to industrialize.

Years before, most countries reduced their emissions by a few points. Most did it without noticing because global warming was not considered a large problem at the time. It’s almost ironic that now that global warming is a big problem more people are creating more emissions rather then lessening them.

Global Warming

Climate Change: How will the change in climate affect civilization?

Procedure: In this process, I shall be coming up with a question and a hypothesis. This question will be answered through secondary research. I will also be using prior knowledge from my past studies on global warming to answer this question to its fullest extent.

Currently, Earth’s temperature is rising. Although global warming is already affecting the Earth drastically, its effects on the human civilization as a whole will continue unless we take action.
Climate change has affected our civilization in many ways. The problems caused by climate change can all be measured in different lengths. They range from limited food resources to creating havoc with our water resources.
My hypothesis is that climate change will affect mankind and the way we live to this day. I estimate that if global warming continues, our food and water resources will be close to none by the end of the century. The fact that this is a current problem is the basis for my theory, considering that it is extremely possible that by the end of the century, the constant climate change will continue to deplete the two main resources we need to survive; that is, if no actions are taken. Not only will global warming affect our food, but our ability to live where we do.
It is predicted that largely populated states such as California and New York, are the most at risk in facing a serious threat to their water resources due to climate change. These problems will be caused by the inconsistent and irregular fall of precipitation. Climate change has altered the time during the year when rain and snow fall, which will lead to water reservoirs swamping early in the year. With no other option but to dump some of the water, cities around the globe will be left with very little to no water by late summer. Without water, our crops cannot be produced. Over time, if the pattern continues (or quite possibly worsens) we will continue to use our water until we have nothing left, which becomes a very huge problem for very huge cities.
Another big issue is that most coastal cities and Small Island States are in danger of being flooded and natural disasters. With the melting of ice caps, the seas are rising inches higher, and for places close to or surrounded by water, that is a huge problem. Islands and cities by the docks are losing surface area little by little every year as the waters begin to rise, and with the rising sea levels comes to rising risk of natural disasters. With the risen water so close to the homes of many, storms and tidal waves will become much more serious, making it possible for entire cities to be devastated and damaged.
Changes in weather have also become an inconvenient problem for our civilization. The weather in the seasons has become irregular and inconsistent (one day it’s too hot, too cold, etc.). Every year, record temperatures are being broken among the US. The summers are being extremely hot, and the heat drags on well into the fall. As humans in reaction to the seemingly unbearable heat, we turn on our air conditioners. These air conditioners require mass amounts of energy to function, and somewhere off there is a power plant burning mass amounts of fossil fuels to provide us with this energy. The emissions from that plant add to the warming of the Greenhouse effect. It is constant contributions of carbon dioxide that are creating these issues of climate change.
A recent study concluded that around the halfway mark of the century, the Earth’s water bodies will have risen by an approximate 4 inches. Forecast information has also shown that weather patterns are changing, becoming much more infrequent and inconsistent within the seasons. Combine all of these together, and we have a mess of problems on our hands.
Although some scientists say that the effects of the damage we’ve caused our atmosphere will continue on for years whether we stop the trend or not, they also argue that it is not to late to try to attempt to reverse our damage. All types of life on earth are threatened by the change in climate, and if we as humans do not clean up our act, we will be one of the many animals who will have to suffer the consequences.

This essay will attempt to answer the following question: “How is Global Warming affecting the Wild Kingdom.”
My initial plan at the beginning of this unit was to construct a controlled experiment illustrating the damaging affects of habitat change due to global warming. My plans to do this were to grow plants, and during the day, expose them to sunlight as equally and accurately as possible, and have them each receive an equal measured amount of water. After the sun would set, they would each be placed and isolated at a sustained temperature. Unfortunately, the plants did not grow correctly, and the plant that was supposed to endure an 85 degree Fahrenheit temperature could not be incubated properly, causing damage to the plant itself and therefore tainting the experiment, it’s results becoming unreliable and inaccurate information.
Not having much time to retry my past experiment, as well as create a new one, I was forced to complete some sort of work as quickly as I could in a short amount of time. The easiest way to do this, I thought, would be to write a Secondary Research Paper. As far as topic goes, I did not change much. I am still focusing on showing the damaging effects of habitat change. However, I did narrow this paper down to show the effects on the Wild Kingdom.
It’s quite obvious that the global temperature is rising. Humans are mostly to blame, as the human population is ever-growing and therefore requires more to sustain itself. And most definitely, the temperature changes have not gone unnoticed, not only in our human society, but also amongst the creatures of the Wild Kingdom.
My general hypothesis would be that the increase in climate changed the habitat and living styles of many animals worldwide. Due to the increase in heat, most animals found ways to adapt to the ever-changing climate. The animals most fit to survive managed to cope and deal with the changes in their environment. These traits are then passed on to their offspring, creating a chain of adaptations to the new environment. Such adaptations begin the creation of new species, and these new species will learn to cope with habitat changes if the rise in temperatures continues at a steady pace.
In order to show that my hypothesis was or was not correct, I was required to use my basic research skills. All of my research was gathered from the Internet, rather than books or magazines (see bibliography).
The procedure in which to produce this paper was rather simple, and is as follows:
1. Choose a sub-topic of global warming that I find interesting.
2. Narrow that down to something researchable and understandable.
3. Begin to gather data, and background information.
4. Begin writing drafts, until final paper is produced.
Over the years, scientists have easily observed that the planet is warming, and both plants and animals are going to dramatic lengths to cope with the change. So, while humans argue about thermometer readings, animals are actually providing evidence of climate and habitat change that should be considered when casting scientific and political decisions.
In a study conducted in 2003, published in the journal Nature, scientists analyzed numerous studies involving plants and animals from the wild, for changes due to global warming. Out of nearly 1,500 species examined, researchers found that about 1,200 species showed temperature-related changes that scientists expected were caused by global warming.
Another study also conducted in 2003 by Phillip Gingerich examined horse fossils from a warming period that occurred 55 million years ago. They found that as temperatures rose, the fossils shrank, from the size of a small dog to a house cat. The researchers believe the shrinking was caused by the horse’s digestion of plants whose tissues were low in protein, but rather high in toxic compound; plants that flourished in the carbon dioxide-rich environment of that time.
It’s quite obvious that global warming is affecting the lives of many, if not all, types of wildlife in the US, and around the globe. Furthermore, if the warming continues, it will be a huge problem for all animals, including us as human beings. Even if all pollution were stopped today, the climate will warm at least one more degree by the year 2100 and seas will rise approximately 4 inches, according to one recent study. Another report suggests that warming is unstoppable through the year 2400. Despite the warning, scientists also believe it isn’t too late to stop the trend.
Although it is far too early to tell whether my hypothesis is true or false, it is plausible. Even more so, my hypothesis seems to be on the correct track, and even better, cannot be proven wrong.

Art History Research Paper.

Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium on November 21st, 1898. In 1912, when Magritte was only 14 years old, his mother committed suicide when she drowned herself in the River Sambre. Magritte was a well known Surrealist artist, and is well known for a series of amusing and witty images. Magritte studied for two years at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years, from 1916 to 1918. During that time, he met his wife Georgette, whom he married in 1922. In 1926, Magritte produced his first surrealist painting, The Lost Jockey (Le Jockey Perdu) and held his first exhibition in Brussels in 1927. Critics tore Magritte’s exhibition to pieces. Magritte was so depressed by the failure of his first exhibit that he moved to Paris, France, where he became friends with poet Andre Breton, and became involved in the surrealist group. Magritte died of cancer on August 15th, 1967.
The art piece I chose titled ‘The Lovers (Les Amantes),’ shows two people, a male and a female. The male is wearing a black suit with a white collared shirt and a black tie. The female is wearing a red dress. On their heads, they are wearing what burlap bags, covering all their facial features. Where it appears their two lips meet is dark and shaded. They are in one corner of a room. This is one of two renditions Magritte painted.
In my own words, The Lovers represents many things. Magritte was known to use puns and witty metaphors in his artwork. And example of this can clearly be seen in his series called The Treachery Of Images (La Trahison des Images). This included a painting of a pipe, with the words “Leci n’est pas un pipe,” which, when translated, means, “This is not a pipe.” Although clearly, it was a painting of a pipe, that was all it was; a painting of a pipe, but not a pipe itself. The Lovers could be a play on the saying ‘Love is Blind.’ Lacking 4 of their 5 senses, they are not able to visibly see each other. When trying to determine whether The Lovers is a negative or positive image of love, I would have to go with the stance that it is a negative portrait of love. The Lovers also hints disconnection between the two lovers. They are close together, showing there is obviously a physical and intimate connection between them. However, where their lips meet, is dark and in the shadows, showing some disconnection between the two, or even more so, an uncertainty of the identity of the person whom they loved. Even more so, The Lovers represents Magritte’s own pain. When Magritte’s mother’s body was pulled up from the river, her nightgown was pulled over her head. At 14, Magritte was exposed to the image of his bare mothers body with her face wrapped by her nightgown. Because of this stinging memory, Magritte created many images of faces draped with cloth.
During the 1920’s, Paris became home to many young artists, Magritte included. Those artists often met in cafes and discussed their ideas and personal views. Since the First World War had ended, the world as people knew it had changed forever. No longer did people have the sense of security they were accustomed to. The world was changing, and these artists knew it. And so, with the changing o their world, their art began to change as well. Many different artistic movements began taking place, such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Dadaism. Some of the newer forms of art were cruelly rejected upon their beginnings. When Rene Magritte moved to Paris, he became aware of all these different movements, but was specifically drawn to the Surrealist movement, which was mainly a political movement, where he began doing some of his best work.
During the time of the painting, a lot of things in the world were being redefined after the war; peace, war, art, and even love. Magritte always did his best to provoke people’s thoughts, and during the new Surrealist movement, he intended to do just that. He began to paint many wonderful paintings that put a play on common sayings, redefining them as well. He created images that could seem normal objects or occurrences in lift, and created extra illusions, alterations, and made his images seem “above-reality.” All his pieces reached the Surrealist aim of exploring and liberating the creative powers of the unconscious mind.
To sum things up, I think that The Lovers is a beautiful and amazing piece or artistic expression. I was drawn to it the second I laid eyes on it, as well as some of his other works in the Museum Of Modern Art. I also am now very interested in the surrealist movement. If you have not yet seen any of Magritte’s other works, I highly recommend it.

Art History Research Paper.

1. Research the artist.
a. Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium on November 21st, 1898. Magritte was a Belgian Surrealist artist, and is well known for a series of amusing and witty Images. In 1912, Magritte’s mother committed suicide when she drowned herself in the River Sambre. He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years, from 1916 to 1918. During that time, he met his wife Georgette, who he married in 1922. In 1926, Magritte produced his first surrealist painting, The Lost Jockey (Le Jockey Perdu) and held his first exhibition is Brussels in 1927. Critics tore Magritte’s exhibition to pieces. Magritte was so depressed by the failure of his first exhibit, he moved to Paris, France, where he became friends with fellow artist Andre Breton, and became involved in the surrealist group. Magritte died of cancer on August 15th, 1967.

2. Objectively describe the art piece.
a. The piece shows two lovers, kissing and embracing. Both the male and female are adorning cloths, or what appears to be a burlap bag, on their heads – covering all their facial features. The cloth is not designed or colorful, but rather dim and plain.

3. Interpret the art piece.
a. In my own words, The Lovers represents many things. Magritte was known to use puns and witty metaphors in his artwork. An example of this can clearly be seen in his series called The Treachery Of Images (La Trahison des images). This included a painting of a pipe, with the words ‘Leci n’est pas un pipe,’ which when translated means, “This is not a pipe.” Although clearly, it was a painting of a pipe, that was all it was. A painting of a pipe, but not a pipe itself. The Lovers could be a play on the saying ‘Love is Blind.’ Lacking 4 of their 5 senses, they are not able to visibly see each other. The Lovers also hints a disconnection between the two lovers. They are close together, showing there is obviously a physical and intimate connection between them. However, where their lips meet, is dark and in the shadows, showing a negative image of love and some sort of disconnection between the two, or even more so, an uncertainty of the person whom they loved.

4. Describe the historical context of this piece.
a. During the 1920’s, Paris became home to many young artists. Those artists often met in cafes and discussed their ideas and personal views. Since the First World War, the world as people knew it had changed forever. A sense of security that people once had was gone. The world was changing, and these artists knew it. And so, with the change of their world, their art began to change as well. Many different artistic movements began taking place, such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Dadaism. When Rene Magritte moved to Paris, he became aware of all these different movements, but was specifically drawn to the Surrealist movement, where he began doing some of his best work.

5. Describe the connection between the Artist's time period and the artwork.
a. During the time of the painting, a lot of things in the world were being redefined after the devastation of the war. War, Peace, Art, and even Love. Magritte tried his best to make people think, and during the new Surrealist movement, he intended to do just that, making things that could seem normal without puns, or extra illustrations, surreal or “above reality.”

Lucas and I have had our share of double dates. I wish I could say with a variety of different people in all sorts of crazy, ridiculous, and different relationships. However, that isn’t entirely the case. It’s been within a close circle of friends, and for the most part, each relationship had something in common. However, the dates were never anywhere near what someone would consider normal, and actually got more bizarre each and every time.
Probably the most memorable was the most recent. Lucas and I were double dating the same people we normally do. It was to the same place we normally go (the movies). It was the same day it normally is. Everything was as normal… so who would have thought it would have been the most ridiculous date I’d ever go on?
Lucas and I arrived at the movies, and not having eaten yet, went to the pizzeria only a short distance down. We ate, and then stood in front of the movies again, and waited. We called; they weren’t anywhere near ready yet. So we headed to some church and sat on the steps and talked about the most bizarre things you could imagine. However, I’m not going to mention them here… after all… some conversations are personal.
So… after a while, we got up from the steps and headed to the movies. We waited, and waited…. Until finally, we saw one of the pair of people we were supposed to meet up with. He was running down the street, until he saw us and came to us. He said something quickly, and then ran off to go get her.
Her house was not too far away, but they were taking forever. So we walk down, and finally we see them. But sharing the sidewalk with us was a flock of the vilest birds on the planet – pigeons.
The movie we were planning to sneak into had already started and, the next show didn’t start till around 5. It was only 2 or 3:30, so we didn’t know what to do. We stood there in front of the theatre like idiots for a good ten minutes, and then for some reason, walked back and sat on the steps of another side of the same church. We stood on those steps for an hour, sleeping, playing games, talking, but… mostly sleeping or sitting in silence.
After that, we headed for a park not too far down. There was a giant metal spider there. All the kids were in the dolphin sandbox, so we stole the spider… I mean, they had something, so we took whatever was left. We sat there… I could say it was possibly the most boring experience of my life. That was, until, Lucas wanted to play some game.
The game consisted of trying to knock someone off of the spider. Lucas and I were the only one who would play, and, him being the stronger on, pushed me off the spider first. I fell on my knees, and I could not believe I had fallen!! What I couldn’t believe even more was that he was hysterically laughing.
I’m sure that you’ve had that Fisher Price ring tower. The one where you’re just supposed to stack all those different colored rings on the stupid tower? We saw one on the floor. So, we stole that from the little kids too. We went into an alley right by the park and began to play ring-toss with it. We sucked. Not one person got a ring on… although we tried only like 3 times before we got born. There was another huge group of pigeons, which I ran into (with my eyes covered).
Finally, we saw the movie. It was long and interesting, but not the most interesting, and the ending sucked. I don’t know what the other people did that day, but Lucas came over to my place and we had dinner.
I don’t have the ticket stub. I don’t have anything from that day except for the yellow donut from the Fisher Price ring… I keep it on the floor by the computer, and every time I look at it I laugh, because fact is we can be grown up, but we don’t wanna, and acting like an idiot sometimes is fun.

Merrill Lynch.

Global Headquarters:
Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.
4 World Financial Center
250 Vesey Street
New York, NY
10080 USA

Main Number: 212.449.1000
Number for US General Inquiries: .800.MERRILL. (637.7455.)

Merrill Lynch’s Mission/Philosophy:
-ML (Merrill Lynch) is one of the worlds leading financial management and advisory companies.
“We’re growing our business by helping clients grow theirs.” –ML.

Company History:

-Founded in 1914 by Charles E. Merrill & Co.

-1930’s: This decade marked the transfer to E.A. Pierce & Co. of the retail brokerage business of Merrill, Lynch & Co. E.A. Pierce reigned as leader of Wall Street, backing many New Deal reforms and acquiring many companies. Later in the decade, Merrill, Lynch was incorporated, dropping forever the comma between its two names.

-1940’s: Ideas and innovation flourished as Charles E. Merrill’s mission to bring “Wall Street to Main Street” took hold and “our costumer’s interest must come first” became paramount. These were also turbulent times with rising costs, high taxes, restricted commodity exchanges and the uncertainty of a world at war. All offices were enlisted to sell defense bonds as part of the war effort.

1950’s: A postwar bull market kicked off the decade with a rush and ML became a household name in the US. Steady growth, confident optimism and global expansion marked the decade. ML offices opened in Great Britain, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, and Canada. The firm and industry mourned the loss of Charles E. Merrill who died on Oct. 6th, 1956 at the age of 60.

1960’s: Forces of change were felt within the industry. The decade gave rise to the institutional investor, even as the latter half saw the end of the great postwar bull market. Merrill Lynch’s leadership role in the offering of “Cornsat” solidified the firm’s status in the investment banking and paved the way for the world’s first communication satellite to be launched into space. Domestically, the firm reached the $1 billion mark even as it’s global expansion accelerated.

1970’s: Growth, diversification, and innovation came to Merrill Lynch in a decade of change. The company acquired White, Weld & Co. and Greenbody & Co., and later launched one of the industries most ambitious projects- the Cash Management Account (CMA) –and proved it was “Bullish on America” by going public. Internationally, the firm looked to the East for expansion and concentrated on its capital markets and banking activities.

1980’s: Political and economic changes took place at a breathtaking speed. It was a turbulent time for Wall Street, as scandals rocked some of the most powerful firms in the industry and the shock of “Black Monday” reverberated around the world. Exemplifying their principle of Teamwork, Merrill Lynch employees pulled together to calm and inform uncertain clients. The firm rose to meet these and other challenges of the new global marketplace through innovation and attention to clients’ evolving needs.

1990’s: The decade will be remembered as a turning point in the geopolitical order that had prevailed throughout the 20th century. Merrill Lynch continues to demonstrate its commitment to global leadership as the preeminent financial management and advisory company- serving governments, institutions, and individuals throughout the world. The Merrill Lynch Principles remain a guideline to everything ML does.

Company Leadership:

Stan O’Neal is the Current CEO of Merrill Lynch.

Biography on Stan O’Neal:

Stan O'Neal, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president.
He heads one of the world's leading personal and institutional financial management and advisory firms, with offices in 36 countries and total client assets of approximately $1.5 trillion.
Mr. O'Neal became chief executive of the company in December 2002 and was elected chairman in April 2003. He has held a series of increasingly responsible positions since joining the company in 1986 as vice president of investment banking.
He was named president and chief operating officer in July 2001 and served as president of Merrill Lynch's U.S. Private Client group from February 2000 until July 2001. He served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Merrill Lynch from 1998 until 2000 and also held the position of executive vice president and co-head of the Corporate and Institutional Client Group (now Global Markets & Investment Banking) prior to that.

You can't be addicted to something if you don't love it first. In order to be addicted to something, it's more than just a chemical imbalence, as I'm sure we've been brought up to believe. It's far more than that. Love's like an addiction. Hell- it is one. With that stated, it can simply be stated that addiction is love. A love for something, anything you feel you can't live without. If you can live without it, you don't love it. It's almost like algebra. Addiction * Love= Love * Addiction. It's a simple common fact that cannot be disproven.

How do you love something that hurts you? I know this isn't impossible. I have felt this in so many different instances during my lifetime. It's a very confusing and hurtful feeling. You want to kill it. You want it to stop. Why love something that tears you apart? It doesn't make much sense. But nothing really does anymore. How could anything be easy anymore? It's impossible. So goddamn impossible.

Help?

Soo... It's Saturday. Lucas is... going out. Somewhere. And then he's going to work at 3 or 4... I'm going to 5th Avenue with Priscilla once she's done with her pizza. I had a lot of spare time in the morning so I went and took a bath. I was in there for about a half an hour to and hour when Lucas got back home and called me. I was too lazy to get out of the bath so I just stood there on the phone for a while. How relaxing...

I even had hair to straighten my hair pretty decently... And I slept good... that day's going slow, but I haven't had this much time to myself to get something accomplished in such a long time...

And now... Tomorrow I might be either A) Double Dating with Jesse and Kerri, or B) Going to my brother's baseball game. I don't know yet. I'll have to see. I might even be going to the cemetery. I don't know yet...

Well, Priscilla's IMing. She must be ready.

So, with much love, I'm out.

~*~Lucas Admits He's a Whore. ♥ ~*~

GollyGeeItsLucas: AHHH!!!
GollyGeeItsLucas: I'm a whore!
DontCryEmoKidsx3: ...Totally.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: But i love it. :]
GollyGeeItsLucas: Hahaha
GollyGeeItsLucas: Sure you do!
GollyGeeItsLucas: AHH!!!
GollyGeeItsLucas: I'm such a whore
GollyGeeItsLucas: First you, then ogres!
GollyGeeItsLucas: AAHH!
GollyGeeItsLucas: I gotta stop...

~*~ Liz and Lucas learn some Algebra ♥ ~*~

DontCryEmoKidsx3: I learned some valueable algebra today!
GollyGeeItsLucas: Haha
GollyGeeItsLucas: Nice
GollyGeeItsLucas: How and where>
GollyGeeItsLucas: *?
DontCryEmoKidsx3: I figured it out myself today at home.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Ready?
GollyGeeItsLucas: Yes Liz
DontCryEmoKidsx3: OK.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: So first we state that guys equial time and money:
Guys= time multiplied by money.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: And as we all know, "time is money."
Time= Money.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Therefore:
Guys= money times money= (money) squared.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: And because "money is the root of all evil";
Money= the square root of evil.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Therefore:
Guys= (square root of evil) squared.

And we are forced to conclude that:
Guys= evil.
GollyGeeItsLucas: Haha, ok, well I know some algebra...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Ready?
DontCryEmoKidsx3: OK>
DontCryEmoKidsx3: *OK.
GollyGeeItsLucas: Ok, well, we all know "Jelwery is a girls best freind"...
GollyGeeItsLucas: And in order to get that jewlery, they need money...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Girls = Hungry for cash
GollyGeeItsLucas: And we all know women have no self respect...
GollyGeeItsLucas: So they do whats known as flirting...
GollyGeeItsLucas: With guys...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Old Rich guys...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Or young guys who work at laundrymats...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Either one...
GollyGeeItsLucas: And well, Working men = Money
GollyGeeItsLucas: Money = Girls desire
GollyGeeItsLucas: So girls go after guys (Money source)
GollyGeeItsLucas: And in my conclusion Girls = Whore + money squared = happiness for women
GollyGeeItsLucas: Understand?
GollyGeeItsLucas: Hmmm?
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Aw, yeah.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: But see, I know something else.
GollyGeeItsLucas: Haha, ok
GollyGeeItsLucas: Shoot
DontCryEmoKidsx3: For guys, sex=everything,
DontCryEmoKidsx3: and well, guy - girl= no sex,
GollyGeeItsLucas: Lmao no!
DontCryEmoKidsx3: so guy + hooker + money= sex
DontCryEmoKidsx3: hooker + money + sex= aids
GollyGeeItsLucas: Lmao
GollyGeeItsLucas: Hahaha
DontCryEmoKidsx3: aids + guy = death
DontCryEmoKidsx3: See?
GollyGeeItsLucas: Hmmm
GollyGeeItsLucas: So...
GollyGeeItsLucas: Girls lust for money = Horny guys = death?
GollyGeeItsLucas: Haha
GollyGeeItsLucas: Nice
GollyGeeItsLucas: Very wise my Liz
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Aw gee, I love you.
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Lucas= Sex. <33

~*~ Lucas Gets Adorable ♥ ~*~

GollyGeeItsLucas: Oh Liz
GollyGeeItsLucas: I wanna hold you
GollyGeeItsLucas: :)
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Well, that's just dandy,
DontCryEmoKidsx3: cause I wanna be held.

GollyGeeItsLucas: Hahaha
GollyGeeItsLucas: YEY!!!
GollyGeeItsLucas: So you mean I get to hold ya for free?
GollyGeeItsLucas: This is like a dream come true!
DontCryEmoKidsx3: Aw shucks. :]

~*~ Lucas is so adorable that he made me cry ♥ ~*~

My Inquiry homework that I couldn't post. [Mar. 10th, 2006|12:37 am]

[Current Mood | Bahh.... life is boring.]
[Current Music |Road Trippin' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.]

OK.... onward ho!

Question 1: Well, I guess we could find reliable information with companies and information providers we trust... for instance, I'd probably feel that www.pbs.org would give me more realiable information than www.johndclare.net, because I am familiar with the name. Not only would the information provider help me see if something was realiable, but by checking the facts and checking the author, as well as comparing with other articles, I'm sure I could find out how realiable the information really is!

Question 2: Hmm... I'm not sure globalization caused a conflict in Finland... Finland pretty much remained out of affairs that affected other places... I suppose that the whole Russia ruling Finland thing affected it... Russia took away most of the self-government in Finland. When Russia went to war, the Finns took advantage of this oppurtunity to declare its indepency, and create it's own parliament in 1906, giving women suffrage and stuff like that... Yup!

Not sure if the last question is answered well... I doubt it... but it's late and... yeah, I'm tired.

'Car Underwater.' [Jan. 17th, 2006|07:08 pm]
[Current Mood | All these thoughts in my head.]
[Current Music |'Car Underwater,' by Armor For Sleep.]

Believe the news, I'm gone for good.
Call off the search, no one will know that I am down here.

And believe the note I left for you.
You can't turn back the clocks.
You can't pull me up from here so don't try.

In a car underwater with time to kill.
Thinking back, I forgot to tell you this-
I didn't care that you left and abandoned me.
What hurts more, is I would still die for you.

In a car underwater with time to kill.
Thinking back, I forgot to tell you this-
I didn't care that you left and abandoned me.
What hurts more, is I would still die for you.

Make time, slower. Give me longer.
It's too late for me, no one will know that I am down here.

And believe, your dreams of me sinking.
So far below.
You can't pull me up from here, so don't try.

Leave it up to me, to burden you again.
This one's not your fault- Please forgive.
Leave it up to me, to burden you again.
This one's not your fault, so forget, so forget, so forget me.

Don't think back on me, don't think back on me at all. Just let me go.

Don't think back on me, don't think back on me at all. Just let me go.

Don't think back on me, don't think back on me at all. Let me go.

Don't think back on me, don't think back on me at all.

I would still die for you.
I would still die for you.
And I would still die for you.
I would still die for you.
And I would still die for you.
